This year has been a strange one for Oasis, the legendary British rock group who continue to gain new fans as well as keep hold of their old ones. For most of 2009 Oasis have been on a world tour in support of Dig Out Your Soul, and selling out everywhere they go. But alongside that success has been reports of in-fighting and rumors they are about to split.
Oasis played the first of the V Festival on Saturday but canceled their hadline appearance on Sunday due to Liam Gallagher apparently having fallen victim to viral laryngitis. Snow Patrol replaced them for the Chelmsford gig but that didn’t stop the press from having a field day looking at what this meant for the band.
Taking it on face value, Liam was ill and couldn’t sing. Fair enough. But the Britsh tabloids rarely take anything on face value and suggested this could be the end of Oasis. The Chelmsford V gig was scheduled to be the last of this current tour and that has led to the speculation that it may be all over for the boys from Manchester.
Liam Gallagher tweeted about the claims, denying Oasis had played their last gig ever. And then the band issued a statement through their official Web site Oasisinet stating, “Oasis will complete the rest of the world tour in Europe and then take some well-earned time off before they begin to think about the next album and tour.” So, not splitting up but maybe taking a break.
Even Natalie Appleton, former member of All Saints and sister of Liam’s wife Nicole Appleton, has got involved, telling The Mirror newspaper, “Oasis will die before they split up… they’re going to go on for ever until they are old men. The rumors are absolute rubbish. Even in his sick bed Liam was vowing to get back on stage.”
Then again, Liam has always been the one stating that he’s Oasis until he dies; it’s Noel Gallagher who has made little insinuations that a break may be a good thing. Which is what looks like may now happen. Hopefully, Noel will go off and record a solo album before once again resuming his duties in Oasis. I for one don’t want to see them split, especially as their last two albums have been something of a return to form.
Thanks Vanessa! :-D
